Story

Where history meets revelry since 1862.

Creating community since 1862.

The building now housing the Cutthroat Tavern in Markleeville, California, boasts a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Originally constructed in 1862 as the Fiske House in Silver Mountain City, it was dismantled and relocated to Markleeville in 1886 by A.M. Grover. Reassembled board by board, it reopened as the Hot Springs Hotel, serving visitors to the nearby Grover Hot Springs.

In 1900, the establishment was renamed the Alpine Hotel, a title it retained for many years. Throughout the 20th century, the building functioned as a central hub for the community, adapting to the evolving needs of Markleeville's residents and visitors. In the latter part of the century, it became known as the Cutthroat Saloon, earning a reputation as a lively spot for locals and travelers. At one point, the ceiling was famously adorned with numerous bras, a testament to its rowdy patronage.

In the early 2000s, the establishment underwent significant renovations under new ownership and was rebranded as the Wolf Creek Bar & Restaurant. The extensive restoration aimed to preserve the building's historical charm while updating its facilities to modern standards. Despite the name change, many locals continued to refer to it as the Cutthroat.

In 2020, the building was purchased by the Bakers in collaboration with the Radach’s, who restored its original name to the Cutthroat Brewing Company, to honor its storied past. They sought to maintain its historical ambiance, lining the walls with photos of Markleeville through the ages, including photographs of the Alpine Hotel in the early 1900s.

Today, operating as the Cutthroat Tavern, the establishment continues to serve as a cherished gathering place in Markleeville, seamlessly blending its historical legacy with a community connection.
